Tallahassee’s Electric & Gas Utility provides reliable electric service to over 125,000 customers in a 221 square mile service territory that includes both the City of Tallahassee and portions of the unincorporated areas of Leon County and reliable natural gas services to over 35,000 customers within Leon, Wakulla, and Gadsden counties. A full service vertical electric utility, Tallahassee has 725 MW of generation located at three sites, 60MW of solar under a Purchase Power Agreement, 224 miles of transmission (115kv & 230 kv), 28 substations with two more in engineering, and 3,631 miles of distribution. The City’s Electric Utility is registered as a Balancing Authority, Transmission Owner/Operator, and Generation Owner/Operator under the NERC Reliability Standards.
Tallahassee Electric & Gas has been recognized nationally and regionally for its strong performance. These recognitions have included the APPA E. F. SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES
As an Assistant General Manager for the Electric & Gas Utility, the successful candidate will lead the Energy Supply Division. The incumbent serves on the Electric & Gas Utility management team and exercises considerable independent judgment, discretion, initiative, and independence in carrying out their responsibilities. Work is performed under the administrative direction of the General Manager–Electric & Gas Utility. The work is reviewed through conversations, conferences, reports, observations, and by results obtained. Responsibilities include:
- Ensuring that the operational responsibilities are conducted within prudent utility practices, generally accepted engineering practices, and consistent with the City’s values and customer service standards.
- Participating in the development of the long-term Electric & Gas Utility strategic plan and the annual operational plans to support the strategic plan.
- Establishment and administration of safety programs and practices to promote a safe work environment.
- Ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements including, but not limited to, North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), SERC reliability standards, environmental regulations and requirements, and land use regulations and requirements.
- Management of the City’s Electric power generation facilities including the operations, maintenance, plant expansions and plant retrofits.
- Management of the Wholesale Energy Services group which includes fuel procurement, fuel risk management program, and next day and beyond energy trading.
- Ensuring operations are conducted within all applicable environmental and regulatory permits.
- Interacts with regulatory agencies on permit issues and operations.
- Acts as the City’s Designated Representative under Title IV of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.
- Serve as the Logistics Section Lead responsible for coordination of all logistical activities within the Electric & Gas Utility during a storm response period.
EDUCATION, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE and REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate will have:
- A bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science or related field and six years of professional experience in one or more of areas associated with planning, design, operations, regulation, or maintenance of: (i) electrical power delivery facilities; (ii) system operations; (iii) electric generating plants of 100 megawatts or larger in size; or (iv) NERC Compliance activities; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Three years of the required experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.

Individuals in these classifications are:
- Considered essential employees during emergency/storm events and must be able to work 16 hours per day for extended periods of time and may be required to be away from their family.
